Stepping down will prove suicidal, PDP leadership tells Mehbooba | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Sep 6: A day after the All Party Delegation’s visit to restive Kashmir valley failed to yield any result, speculations galore about Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti stepping down. However, her party has suggested her against resigning. “If the opposition wants anything from her (Mehbooba), it is her stepping down. They want to fish in the troubled waters. If she succumbs, it will be detrimental for the party,” a senior PDP leader said, wishing anonymity. There were reports about Mehbooba contemplating the option of resigning in the backdrop of failed visit of the APD to Valley. Prior to the visit, she was optimistic of some breakthrough in the current unrest in Valley that has resulted in the killing of around 75 people. As separatists refused to meet the APD and the situation turning murkier with each passing day, the pressure is mounting on Mehbooba to take a call about her fate. However, top sources in the PDP divulged that Mehbooba has been unanimously asked not to resign. “There were voices of concern about the present wave of unrest, but everyone within the party is confident about this being a temporary phase which will pass soon,” the sources said. It was informed further that Mehbooba was told by her colleagues that she will have around five years to show her abilities and create a good will among the people of the state. “If she resigns at the present juncture, it will prove detrimental for one and all within the party. It will reveal to the people how CM left them in the middle of the crises, something opposition will cash on,” a party leader said. During the meeting held between the party leaders at Mehbooba’s official residence, it was unanimously decided that she would continue as CM. “What will we achieve by leaving the government? People will remember us as absconders and that will not be a good for the next elections. It will benefit the opposition. By not resigning we will have more rewards than risks. We can win the confidence of people by providing them an effective governance after this turmoil period will be over,” said the PDP leader, adding that the GoI too wouldn’t want Mehbooba to step down from her post. Mehbooba had, after much reluctance, assumed state’s top post. It was four months after her father’s death that she finally took the reins of governance in her hands. GoI has already assured her of full support and compliance to the Agenda of Alliance, a draft that both parties agreed before stitching a common ground for the government formation. |
