Chinar, walnut trees axed; accused yet not booked | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 6: The authorities concerned are yet to book those who axed chinar and walnut trees in Budgam district taking advantage of the ongoing unrest in the valley. According to reliable sources, 12 chinar trees and more than 200 walnut trees were axed between July 15 and October 15 in Budgam district alone. One green chinar tree was Friday last felled by a man near his house at Shipora Magam, Budgam. The man stands identified. Sources claimed that almost 50 pc of the chinar trees had been cut down when a report in this regard was filed by this newspaper on September 10 last. In another incident at Dangarpora Razwen, Budgam, a green chinar was burnt down by miscreants to facilitate illegal construction. The accused in both the incidents are yet to be booked by police. The incidents of cutting of chinar and walnut trees have increased manifold across the valley after July 8 killing of HM terrorist Burhan Wani in south Kashmir's Anantnag district, notwithstanding the fact that their felling is totally banned. Timber smuggling is also alleged to have started in the upper reaches of Kulgam , Shopian and Budgam districts. Illegal constructions are also alleged to be going in several areas of Kashmir, especially Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal districts. Sources said as many as 80 permissions in Srinagar and 78 in Kulgam district had been given by the authorities concerned for the pruning of these chinar trees. However, under the garb of getting permission from authorities for their pruning, the unscrupulous elements cut them down. In Beerwah area of Budgam, 27 chinar trees had been axed for the last 10 years, sources informed. "It is felt that in the last 10 years, more than 400 chinar trees have been axed across the valley. In many cases, official permission was not sought," said Dr Asif, a Researcher. Sources claimed that as many as 800 walnut trees and 40 chinars had been axed in Anantnag , Kulgam , Shopian , Baramulla and Kupwara districts for the past few years. Sources alleged that a 300-year-old chinar tree was felled at Kralpora Budgam during the days of unrest. During the ongoing protests, as many as 12 huge kikkar trees were axed in Mochwa Bage Mehtab area. Irony is that not even a single FIR has been registered against the accused. |
