Encroaches upon Panjthirthi-Kachi Chawni road

Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 6: The Red Cross Society Jammu has reportedly encroached upon Panjthirthi Kachi Chawni road, by erecting iron poles on the road, at the entrance of its main office, allegedly shrinking the already narrow road.
Though contradicting the claims Regional Secretary of the Society R.C Puri said that the poles were erected by the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) only to desist people from parking their vehicles inadvertently on the road.
Residents of the area informed Early Times that the Red Cross Society earlier gave all the shops on the ground floor of the office on rent, generating income to the tune of several lakhs per months and now again the Society has allegedly encroached upon the road, adding more to traffic chaos in the area.
"The Red Cross Society has already become a business establishment, rather than a volunteer organization, which is very unfortunate", the residents said.
They further said that on routine basis traffic snarls could be witnessed on the area as the Panjthirthi-Kachhi Chawni road was very congested, while as the careless parking on the road, adding more to the chaos.
"How can an organization encroach upon the road by erecting steel poles and if same method would be applied by all the other shopkeepers and offices in the area the road will ultimately turn into a very narrow lane", the residents said, adding that if all the offices adjoining the city roads, would encroach upon the roads, the already congested city would be more congested and the traffic snarls would become a nightmare, which would never end.
The residents appealed Jammu Municipal Corporation to uproot the iron poles, erected by Read Cross society and restore the original width of the road. "Even the roads encroached upon by various organizations across the city, must be removed so that the roads will be decongested to some extent", they said.
Regional Secretary of Red Cross Society, Jammu RC Puri said that the poles were erected by Jammu Municipal Corporation and not by Society. "Earlier the area was used by people to park vehicles, creating chaos in the area", he said, adding that it was also creating hurdles for the shopkeepers, who have been running shops in Red Cross building.
Over the question of giving shops on rent, Puri said that Society was not getting any fund and to run various activities, the funds were to be generated and giving shops on rent was one such activity.
