After Sainik Colony, separatists-NC join hands to stoke another controversy | Delimitation of Assembly constituencies | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 6: Even as Kashmir is struggling to come out of the prevalent unrest, the separatists and the opposition National Conference have reportedly joined hands to stoke another controversy, which may worsen the situation in the restive Valley. After having triggered an unwarranted controversy over proposed establishment of Sainik Colony in Kashmir, both the NC and the separatists have locked horns with the government over proposed delimitation of the Assembly constituencies. The two groups have already started issuing "provocative statements", which are trying to undermine the rights of the suppressed people of Jammu while the NC is even targeting the Chief Secretary. The separatists, on the other hand, have called for a meeting to decide "future course of provoking people of Kashmir on this issue." The National Conference said "PDP must explain its motive behind the PDP-BJP Government's clear push towards delimitation and reorganization of Assembly constituencies in the State." Senior NC Leaders including Party General Secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar, Abdul Rahim Rather, Muhammad Shafi Uri, Chaudhary Muhammad Ramzan and Mian Altaf Ahmed - in a joint statement issued from National Conference Headquarters in Srinagar -said this was a "dangerous covert attempt to manipulate the electoral landscape of the State and would vitiate communal and regional harmony in J&K." "The PDP-BJP Government's decision to ask the Law and Parliamentary Affairs Department to 'formulate an appropriate response for addressing the issue of constituting a delimitation commission and also examine the possibility of rationalizing the Legislative Assembly constituencies' raises some very disconcerting doubts and apprehensions", the senior NC Leaders said. The NC said the government was using Chief Secretary BR Sharma to meet their designs. The NC said "the PDP-BJP Government cannot hide its political motives and nefarious designs behind the Law and Parliamentary Affairs Department or the Chief Secretary in an attempt to somehow desperately circumvent the clear and inviolable restriction on delimitation of Assembly Constituencies till 2026." Separatists on the other hand moved a step further to provoke the people and link the proposed delimitation by linking it with "Muslim majority card." The provocative statements have emerged at a time when the J&K Government has asked its Law and Parliamentary Affairs department to "formulate an appropriate response for addressing the issue of constituting a delimitation commission and also examine the possibility of rationalizing the Legislative Assembly constituencies" in the State. In August Chief Secretary B R Sharma had reportedly chaired a meeting held to review the implementation of PDP-BJP Government's Agenda of Alliance, wherein the issue of delimitation was also discussed. |
