Forest Department in deep slumber

Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 6: Closed for visitors on the pretext of an injured leopard that was spotted a week ago, Raika Environment Park has still not been opened for public. However, the forest officers are using the park for private partying.
The Environment Park situated in Maha Maya hills was closed for public on Tuesday last; however, forest officers have reportedly been partying inside after locking the entrance.
"Visitors have to purchase entry ticket for Rs 5 to 10, and it generates revenue for maintenance of the park, but due to callousness of the department, not a single visitor has been allowed for last one week", sources told Early Times, and added that on Saturday group of students from Kashmir University went to park, but they were not allowed to enter, since the gate was locked from inside, and forest officials were 'discharging' their duties.
"The Park has huge potential to promote tourism, but unfortunately the huge investment has turned into wasteful expenditure" one of the visiting students said.
"If the Park is a private property of officers of the department, they should remove the signboard installed around the park", said angry student and added that it was a deliberate attempt to discourage the people who visit the park.
The students alleged that department failed to maintain the park discouraging the visitors by using these techniques. "The department is actually trying to escape accountability" he added.
"The horrible condition of the park indicates that least attention has been paid towards its beautification. The poorly maintained state-owned biodiversity park not only presents a sorry failure of department, but also reflects callous attitude to make Jammu as an attractive tourist destination for regional, interstate and global tourism", they added.
