11/6/2016 11:07:39 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 6: In yet another case of alleged police highhandedness, the cops have booked a Sarpanch for having supported protests by Public Health Engineering staffers who were seeking release of long-pending salaries.
OP Sharma the Sarpanch of Panchayat Devak in Sunderbani area of Rajauri said he was shocked to know that police has booked him for having merely supported the protesting employees who are staging a roadside dharna some five months back. Police had kept this a secret till recently when Sharma discovered that his name figured in the fake FIR.
Officials confirmed that the Sarpanch has been booked vide FRI NO 29 of 2016 dated May 15, 2016 vide section 188/341.
The Sarpanch said being the democratic head of the area it was his fundamental right to support the voice of people who were crying for injustice meted out to them and were at the verge of starvation.
"Moreover I alone was not supporting the protests, some of the BJP leaders were also present at the sit-in, if they have not be booked, why have I been singled out?" the Sarpanch argued adding police was playing a "tool of some politicians."
Moreover, the Sarpanch said, how could police book him for a case when no one had filed a complaint against him. Sharma said when he initially objected to the registration of fake FIR, the SHO Sunderbani assured him that he would get his name deleted from the FIR in the coming days.
"He SHO had been telling me that he would get the case listed in the Lok Adalat and get my name deleted in the very first hearing. But as nothing of such sort happened I consulted a lawyer who said that SHO must be befooling me," the Sarpanch told Early Times.
The locals said their Sarpanch has been deliberately booked so that police manages to keep him scared. "Basically given the rise in crime graph as is being complained by the people, the SHO Sunderbani is trying to pressurize him not to raise voice but Sarpanch Ji is a brave man who won't succumb to such cheap tactics, and we all stand by him," the area inhabitants said.
The Sarpanch said police has no right to book him as no government department has filed any complaint against him. "This case shows Gunda Raaaj and I shall be the last person to tolerate this," the Sarpanch said.
Flanked by area people he appealed the Inspector General of Police, Jammu range and Senior Superintendent of Police Rajauri to get his name deleted from the fake FIR and take action against the "corrupt SHO" or that the people would be left with no options but to take to streets.
Meanwhile the residents also appealed Divisional Commissioner Jammu to personally look into the matter. "Failing to check rising crime, police is making our lives miserable," the locals said.
The concerned police officials declined to comment on the issue.
