Terrorist killed in Shopian gunfight | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 7: One militant was killed while as two security forces personnel were injured during an encounter in a village in South Kashmir's Shopian district. Reports said that a militant was killed and two soldiers were injured in an overnight gunfight that erupted between militants and the security forces in Wangam village of South Kashmir's Shopian district. Army and Special Operations Group (SOG) personnel of Jammu & Kashmir Police had cordoned off the Wangam village after receiving inputs that some militants are hiding in the village. Following this a brief encounter ensued between two sides and one militant was killed in the gunfight. The identity of slain militant was established by police as that of Saddam Hussain Mir resident of Chitterpora, Shopian. One AK 47 rifle was recovered from the slain militant. Reports said that the residents of the village heard some gunshots during the intervening night of November 6 and 7 and it was only in the morning it got confirmed that a brief encounter had taken place in the village. Following this the body of militant was recovered from the encounter site with some people registering their protest against the killing of slain militant. It has been learnt that Saddam had joined the militant ranks in September this year after he went missing from his home some two months back. The slain militant had memorized holy Quran and was youngest among three siblings. It would be in place to mention here that a militant who had snatched a rifle from the residence of a politician in September was killed in an encounter in Shopian district on Saturday. The Hizbul Mujahedeen militant, a resident of Kellar village, was identified as Waseem Ahmad Khanday. Over 60 weapons had been snatched from policemen ever since unrest began in the valley following the death of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani on July 8. |
