Isolating Geelanis’ essential for restoring peace in Kashmir
11/7/2016 11:18:10 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 7: Kashmir has been news for four months now and, importantly, for wrong reasons. It all started with the lawful killing of Burhan Wani, a Hizb terrorist, on July 8. Things have changed drastically in the Valley since then. The Kashmir Valley today is termed across the globe as a Valley of protests, violent demonstrations, coupled with pro-Pakistan and pro-IS slogans and waving of Pakistan and IS flags.
The Valley's image of a paradise on earth and a centre of learning (Sharda Peeth) stand dented as the past few days have witnessed over 33 schools going up in flames with the Mehbooba Mufti Government doing everything possible to restore Kashmir to its pristine glory and making it a place worth living - a place which again becomes an attraction for tourists from across the world.
Pious and beautiful land of great scholars and learners is now a zone where schools go up in flames and the confrontation between haves and have-nots has virtually turned into a class war.
No one had expected that things in Kashmir Valley would change so drastically. For, it was just like another killing of another terrorists - something very usual in the Valley since 1989, when secessionist violence gripped the Valley. Insiders believe that Burhan was just an excuse and that there was something nasty that had been planned behind the curtain. So much so, there are people who blame not only Pakistan and the frustrated Geelanis’, Mirwaizs’ and Maliks’ but also the National Conference for all that happened in Kashmir during the past four months and what is happening even today. Their argument is that the NC leaders have been stoking the fire and arousing popular feelings by raking up non-issues like delimitation and triple talaq and their whole objective is to create a wall of hatred between the Kashmiri Muslims and the Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP-BJP coalition government.
The involvement of the NC in the conspiracy overtly or covertly cannot be overruled. After all, they are giving their unflinching support to the separatists and also asking New Delhi to engage with Pakistan, saying Pakistan is a stakeholder in J&K. And they have turned so brazen that they are openly advocating anti-Jammu and anti-Ladakh line. So much so, NC additional general secretary Mustafa Kamaal went to the extent of saying that the "surgical strikes were against the sovereign state of Pakistan". And he made this nasty statement knowing it well that the surgical strikes were conducted within PoJK, which was Indian politically and constitutionally. The NC is not only fomenting troubles and adding to the problems of the Chief Minister in the Valley but it is also provoking protests in Jammu and Ladakh to further its sinister agenda.
The fact of the matter is that many have brought the Kashmir Valley to such a pass. What is the most dangerous trend is the rise of those who want to create a Syria-Like or Pakistan-like and Afghanistan-like situation in Kashmir - a trend which the Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, reflected upon not once but a number of times. She had said there were elements who were trying to replicate Syria in Kashmir and her Lok Sabha MP Muzaffar Hussain Beigh openly said that the ongoing movement was not political and that it was essentially religious and those who believed in two-nation theory had become active in the Valley
All in all, it can be said that things in the Kashmir Valley are bad and Geelani and ilk and the parties like the NC are leaving no stone unturned to keep Kashmir pot boiling. Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday expressed the hope that things would soon turn normal. She is the Chief Minister and Home Minister and obviously what she says is meaningful and significant. But the point remains that Geelanis’ are out and their intentions are not noble. They have to be isolated and reined in. This is the only course left.
