Road construction under scanner in JK | | | Saqib Ahmad Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 7: The construction of roads in Jammu and Kashmir has come under scanner with government seeking reports from various departments about the usage of "substandard" material in macadamising the roads. Official sources revealed government had received complaints that several roads have started developing potholes that were executed since 2013 and many gotdamaged within weeks. They said authorities after visiting various parts of the State received complaints from the locals that contractors had used substandard material in construction of road. "Government especially Chief Minister and the concerned ministers of various departments have directed officials to look into the matter," a senior official said. Taking serious note of complaints, sources said government has sought reports from chief engineers of Jammu and Kashmir about the status quo of construction works that were executed since 2013. "I am yet to receive the reports after which necessary action will be taken," a senior official of Roads and Buildings department said. He said the defects liability period was one year that has been extended to two years during which the contractor is responsible for repairing or rectifying defects that appear in the works. "We have also formed the inspection teams who conduct on spot checking of works. It is prerogative that every road has to be tested to check the quality of road works," the official said. Recently, there were reports that contractors were violating rules by using unapproved material in several road constructions. Sources said authorities would take the action against the concerned officials if found guilty, who had given their approval despite usage of substandard material by the contractor. Reports suggest that several roads that were macadamised for the past over a year have started developing potholes due to usage of sub-standard material. "Substandard material had been used that is the reason these roads could not last longer," officials said. Locals also complained that the shabby roads cause inconvenience during rainfall when water gets accumulate in potholes. |
