| MC Khansahib dumping garbage in local nallah | | Murder of Swachh Bharat mission | | Early Times Report
Budgam, Nov 7: At a time when major focus of the Modi government in New Delhi is on better sanitation through its flagship programme "Swachh Bharat Mission", the Municipal Committee (MC) in Khansahib town of district Budgam is allegedly dumping all the garbage in a local water body.
Details available with Early Times reveal that tons of garbage which includes harmful bio-medical waste generated from Sub District Hospital Khansahib is being dumped in Doom Kul, a small nallah flowing through Khansahib. This illegal activity, according to local residents, is going on in the town from last several years as there is no garbage dumping site available in Khansahib.
Locals also allege that Khansahib MC is not making door to door garbage collection in the area with the result heaps of garbage remains unattended.
Pertinently, MC Budgam is said to be undertaking scientific waste management in the town to get rid of the garbage menace. MC Budgam is the first town committee which undertakes this kind of work by collecting garbage from door to door and segregating it at the source. The committee further plans to make bio-fertilizer from the biodegradable / wet waste for which local district administration has provided a piece of land to the MC where composting pits have been constructed.
Early Times had reported earlier on the non-disposal of municipal solid waste in Budgam district. Due to continuous unrest the work of five MCs in district suffered a lot. From last almost four months local MCs in Budgam, Chadoora, Beerwah, Charar-i-Sharief and Magam towns have only been able to lift the garbage from residential areas as shops remain mostly closed.
The existing garbage dumping site in Budgam town has been fully chocked. The new composting unit established by the committee will prove to be helpful for the local municipal authorities. There is an urgent demand of having a new dumping sites in different towns of the district that includes Khansahib.
"We appeal authorities particularly Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh who is incharge of Urban Development department to create scientific solid waste management system in Khansahib town and punish the officials of local MC who dump garbage in Doom Kul," said Nazir Ahmad Shah, a resident of Khansahib. |
