Despite falling short of criteria people at helm want Srinagar to come up as 'Smart City' | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 9: Srinagar, summer capital of the state is following well short of the criteria set out for cities that will compete in the next round of Smart City challenge, but still then the people at helm believe that Srinagar easily fits the bill when it comes to competing for being one of the smart cities of the country. Residents of summer capital rue that they are being denied even the basic facilities of life and not to talk of facilities available to people living in other cities in the country. Over the years the successive state governments have failed to come up to the expectations of people. "Roads constitute an important component of a city and they need to be developed in a proper manner. Most of the roads in Srinagar are in dilapidated condition and no attempt is being made to set the matters rights. Given this fact how Srinagar fits the bill when it comes to developing the city as a Smart City," said Aijaz Ahmad, a resident of Nowgam. Like Aijaz there are many people in Srinagar who say that the state government does not develop the roads in a scientific manner and it is due to this reason that city roads develop potholes on regular basis year after year. There are many other issues due to which Srinagar fails to comply with the standard set out for Smart City challenge. "There is no proper disposal of garbage in Srinagar and this process continues to be carried out in traditional manner. The garbage collected from the city houses is being dumped in a huge plot of land without any scientific treatment. The dumping of garbage has led to law & order problems on many occasions, but still then the officials are not ready to learn any lesson," said Mohammad Nawaz, a resident of Buchpora. It would be in place to mention here that residents of Achan-Eidgah many a times protested against the government after the authorities started dumping garbage in the area. Police had to use force and resort to lathi-charge and lob scores of teargas shells on the people who were protesting against the dumping of garbage. "Many people in Srinagar have no access to clean drinking water, but still then the government claim that all is well. There are many areas in the city where the supply of drinking water is limited to few hours in a day. When people of a city don't have access to clean drinking water how can that city compete for Smart City in the country," said Imtiyaz Ahmad, a resident of Sanat Nagar. Meanwhile, an official spokesman said that District Development Commissioner (DDC) Srinagar, Dr. Farooq Ahmad Lone, today chaired a meeting to review the 'Smart City Srinagar Project' status. "Vice Chairman LAWDA, SSP Srinagar, SSP Traffic, RTO, Joint Director Handicrafts, Joint Director Fire & Emergency Services, Engineers from PWD, UEED, I&FC, besides officers of SMC, SRTC and Health were present in the meeting," said the official spokesman. The spokesman said that DDC, who is holding charge of Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation, directed the concerned to ensure the submission of draft proposals regarding 'Smart City Srinagar' project by November 15, 2016. He also directed the concerned to submit all necessary information regarding the ongoing developmental projects along with those in pipeline for their convergence into the smart city project. |
