Sports Officer misbehaves with national champion athlete in full public view | Sports Council authorities watch like lame ducks | | ET Report Jammu, Nov 9: In an incident of shame and disgrace, Divisional Sports Officer of the State Sports Council misbehaved with a national champion woman gymnast in full public view at a function organized to flag off candidates from the state to attend special certificate course in coaching at National Institute of Sports Patiala. Sources in the Council told ET that Rajan Sharma, who is known for his loose tongue addressed the champion gymnast insolently in presence of so many other candidates, officers of the Sports Council and guests, following which she instantly broke into tears. The champion gymnast is the recipient of the prestigious Sher-i-Kashmir award and the state award and has represented the country in several international championships besides being national record holder with umpteen national gold medals to her credit. Besides, she has also been a member of the State Sports Council in the past and has been instrumental in some important and landmark decisions of the Council. "Such a derogatory behaviour with a decorated player and that too by an officer of the Sports Council is highly deplorable" said an officer of the Council privy to the incident. Sources also disclosed that incident took place in the presence of Joint Secretary of the Council, but he maintained stoic silence over the highly objectionable and condemnable behaviour of his pompous officer. Sources also said that the gymnast also rang up the Chief Sports Officer of the JKSSC who was in Srinagar to inform him about the ill-treatment meted out to her by the Sports officer, but whether the cognizance of her verbal complaint was taken is not known. A member of the Sports Council when contacted admitted that the matter has been brought to his notice. "It is appalling that an officer at the verge of retirement has misbehaved with a woman athlete who has achieved so much as a player. I am confirming the incident and shall surely take up the matter with the Secretary Sports Council" he said. A woman official of the Sports Council who was also present at the venue of the function while expressing her anguish on the unwarranted behviour of the sports officer said, "The Chief Minister who is a woman herself and also president of the Sports Council should take cognizance of the disgrace extended to a champion woman athlete and take appropriate action against the guilty officer". |
