SPDC generates 50% less revenue than NHPC | | | Saqib Ahmad
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Nov 10: In what could be termed as an administrative failure, the State Power Development Corporation (SPDC) has generated a revenue of Rs 8812 crore in the last two decades against the NHPC's Rs 19,431 crore since 2001 in J&K. The NHPC has sold 115636 million units of power generated from seven power projects in the state between January 2001 to March 2016. The NHPC is presently generating 2009 MW from its seven power projects in the state which is almost half of the energy the power giant generates from its projects in other states. While J&K gets a share of only 13 percent from the electricity generated, rest of the electricity is being supplied to north Indian states like Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan and UP. In contrast to NHPC, the SPDC generates around 750 MW from different projects against the total demand of over 2600 MW. The SPDC has generated revenue of Rs 8812 crore since 1998 for the hydroelectricity it has generated in J&K. Official sources reveal that SPDC has generated revenue of around Rs 1000 crore between 1998 and 2008. However, after that there has been a significant increase in its revenue and the corporation has been earning over Rs 1000 crore annually. The SPDC has 22 power projects in the state-seven in Jammu, six in the Valley and nine in Ladakh. "If the NHPC can make revenue, why not the SPDC? It shows administrative failure on part of the state-owned corporation," an official said. J&K is one of the states having vast hydro power potential. But the state is facing electricity crisis, as it has to purchase power worth hundreds of crores annually from the Centre-owned NHPC and other power corporations. The state has purchased power around Rs 30,000 crore during last one decade, putting a huge burden on the exchequer. The data reveals that the state government has spent Rs 1355 crore on power purchase in 2006-07; Rs 1750 crore in 2007-08; Rs 2034 in 2008-09; Rs 1997 in 2009-10; Rs 2200 in 2010-2011. In 2011-2012, the data reveals that Rs 3000 crore was spent on power purchase. In 2012-13 the power bill for the state was Rs 3870 crores; Rs 3945.85 in 2013-14; in 2014-2015 Rs 4719.60; and in 2015-16, around Rs 4800 crore. |
