Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 10: The Lakes & Water Ways Development Authority (LAWDA) has finally taken a call on undertaking door to door collection of garbage inside several residential areas of Dal Lake. The residents of several localities including house boat owners had been demanding this from last several years , but the management of LAWDA and Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) were not taking this issue seriously. As per reliable sources LAWDA is inviting tenders for this work by end of this month.... As per reliable sources the garbage which gets accumulated in Dal lake is hardly collected on daily basis by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), with the result all the non-biodegradable waste which includes plastic and polythene gets accumulated inside the dozens of small localities in Dal lake. Few months back before the unrest began , Early Times correspondent travelled deep inside Dal lake and spoke to large number of people there….. "There is no mechanism to collect the garbage from various localities inside Dal lake and people are forced to through all the polythene and other waste material inside the lake. Had authorities developed a mechanism to undertake door to door collection of garbage with proper segregation , things would have been different today. We have heard that new Vice Chairman of LAWDA is planning to start door to door garbage collection soon. This would be a great service of VC LAWDA towards Dal dwellers " says Ghulam Hassan Dagga a resident of Dal lake "The Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) is making a great impact in many states but the authorities who are involved in sanitation and cleanliness work in our state are murdering this mission by getting involved in all sorts of illegal acts which causes a direct to the public health.
