JK witnesses 133 murders, 430 cases of attempt to murder every year | After every two days, a person is murdered in JK | | Peerzada Ummer ET Report srinagar, Nov 10: It may be shocking to many that in the state of Jammu and Kashmir there are 133 murders taking place every year while the incidents of attempt to murder have been recorded as 430. The number of those persons who have lost their lives due to negligence has been recorded as 766. The records issued by the central government has caused ripples all across as Jammu and Kashmir, otherwise, being viewed as a state where such crimes are less in number. While in other Indian states like Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal, Manipur and others the incidents of murder are far less in number as compared to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. If records are put straight, a murder of a person takes place every two days after in Jammu and Kashmir while as 430 cases have been registered in one single year related to attempt to murder. In Arunachal Pradesh there were 57 cases of murder that took place in a year. In Goa the crimes of such nature were recorded as 31 in one year. In Manipur, the number of such crime has been recorded as 81. In Sikkim it is just 17 and in Nagaland it is 51. The study lists different categories of motives and causes of murders in the country - gain, property dispute, love affairs or sexual relationships, dowry, lunacy, witchcraft, communalism, casteism, class conflict, political reasons and terrorist/ extremist activity". Of these, the three main reasons why people are murdered are: "property disputes, personal vendetta or enmity and love affairs or sexual relationships". In Jammu and Kashmir, as 133 cases of murder has been reported there were 30 cases that have been charge sheeted. Furthermore, there are 273 cases of grievous hurt registered in one year in the state. Reports inform that the exact number of murders taking place in Jammu and Kashmir could be higher as most of the cases went unreported and are generally downplayed by the victims' families. "You cannot ignore the honour killings taking place in Jammu and Kashmir due to love affairs. It is a irony that the society hasn't seen such an evil taking deep roots here since long. There are also murders taking place due to militancy- the numbers are refusing to witness a dip," says Aamir Hussain a JK based sociologist. It was informed further that gun-related violence in India is concentrated in Manipur, Nagaland, Bihar, Jharkhand, Jammu and Uttar Pradesh, which together account for over 60 percent of all registered homicides involving a firearm, India is following the old pattern of a spike in the murder rate with rapid economic growth accompanied by income and social inequality. |
