Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 10: After the opening of Civil Secretariat in Jammu, daily commuters are facing huge inconvenience because of traffic congestion.
As the biannual darbar moves to Jammu, the capability of Traffic Department is put to test for managing traffic in most of the important chowks leading towards city.
There seems no concrete plan with the Traffic Department so far to control the traffic mess. Huge increase in number of vehicles is making it difficult for the public to reach their respective destinations on time. The rush is huge, particularly during the peak hours in the morning and evening.
"One wonders whether the Traffic Department has actually a plan in place to address the issue of traffic mismanagement," said sources.
Many commuters who face the agony of traffic jam on daily basis said they cannot reach their work place on time and have to cut a sorry figure before their employers who often reprimand them.
"We have to face humiliation at the work place in the morning," said a commuter.
Sources said that red lights installed in main chowks like Satwari and other places are either not functioning or functioning with improper calibrations. The commuters are unable to pass through within scheduled time, which is few seconds, hence causing traffic jam.
Meanwhile, sources said the police has beefed up the present strength of traffic personnel by diverting about 100 personnel from its armed wing to assist traffic police.
But this transitory arrangement of bringing in untrained persons speaks about official apathy. Earlier also, the Traffic Department had engaged lady police personnel from the Armed Police for traffic duty in the city. But the lady cops could not deliver, sources said.
"Instead of resorting to temporary measures, the authorities should look into the realistic requirement of increasing the strength of trained traffic cops so that the traffic menace is addressed once and for all," sources added.
