Jammu banks witness long queues of customers waiting to exchange currency notes | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 10: The banks in this winter capital of the state today witnessed heavy rush and long queues of customers, waiting for their turn to exchange banned Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes and get small denomination notes in return. The Centre on November 8 had demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes and banned their use in the market from midnight the same day. Waiting for their turn, customers including women, stood outside the banks to deposit the banned currency notes and get Rs 100 and Rs 50 denomination notes. "I had change of only Rs 500 but spent that in purchasing household items and now no shopkeepers are not accepting Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes due to which we are facing hardships in daily spending,'' Usha Malhotra, lined up outside the bank here, said. She had reached the bank at around 1100 hrs but it took her almost one hour to reach to the cash counter and exchange the notes. "Decision of banning big notes is good and welcomed countrywide. No doubt it will make 'aam aadmi' to suffer for a day or two but actually it is like a surgical strike on money launderers, corrupt and those having black money,'' Suresh Sharma said. He said that common man may suffer due to the instant decision but ultimately he will be getting benefits of such a big move initiated by the Modi Government.
