Trump stages an amazing victory | | | Not with standing the fact that all the Republicans did not support the party candidate, Donald Trump.Trump emerged as the successful 45th President of the United States of America. All the pre-poll surveys were wrong which had given a clear edge to Hillary Clinton. What is amazing is the way former US President, Barack Obama and his wife, had campaigned for Hillary Clinton but the voters made a choice. A colourful billionaire businessman with a propensity to court controversies, Donald Trump single-handedly ran one of the most unconventional presidential campaigns in which political correctness was tossed out of the window. In fact it was Trump who managed a victory for the 162-year old Republican Party, the 70-year-old real estate mogul from New York tapped into the disillusionment of the average American against the establishment, moulding it into vicious anti-immigrant rhetoric which proved to be an electoral goldmine. In the bitterly-fought presidential campaign against Democrat Hillary Clinton, Trump was often synonymous with controversy, with divisive pronouncements on Muslims, immigrants, economy and terrorism. Despite vilification campaign launched by a succession of women accusing him of sexually assaulting them. He also hogged headlines for several suggestive and denigrating remarks against women, including his own daughter, developments that threatened to derail his campaign. But he withstood the impact of the slander of which he was blamed for for.He has emerged as the President of the most powerful country in the world. As hero of the US it is to be seen whether he would follow the policies of Barrack Obama or give a new twist to his foreign policy with reference to India, Pakistan and China.During Obama's time it was the best of relations between India and the US and after a long gap New Delhi had moved closer to Washington. And Washington supported India's campaign against terrorist state like Pakistan. In fact on many occasions Obama cautioned Pakistan against using the soil of Pakistan for exporting terror to India. Most prominent was a video that resurfaced after five years, in which Trump is heard boasting about being able to sexually assault women and get away with it for being "a star". Trump had teased the idea of running for the presidency since 1987, but many feel the final straw for him was the 2011 White House Correspondents' dinner when he was made the unwitting target of President Barack Obama's pointed jokes. It is to be seen what policy Trump would follow against terror and against those supporting terror. In this connection he will be watched with interest as far as the US stand on the ISIS triggered violence is concerned. Once against Trump will be watched by India for its visa policy. Will he be as liberal as the British Prime Minister who has assured that visa rules would be liberalized for the Indian business community. Another point that India will watch with interest is whether Trump would help Modi in his mission of "make in India. And whether Trump will be as liberal as Obama in providing military and non-military aid to India. The 45 President of the United States would be watched whether he would woo India the way Obama had done or shift his policy for wooing Pakistan and China. |
