Amid growing number of neuro cases, GMC says 'No' to latest advancements | Hospital still carries surgery by manual drilling | | K Koushal
Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 28: Despite rise in the cases of neuro patients at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H), the concerned authorities seems unaware about the latest techniques in the field and continues to carry surgeries by manual drilling. According to senior doctor, hospital registers over 60-70 cases of neuro every month, but amid growing number of neuro patients, the hospital administration is reluctant to entail latest advancements, especially for drilling. "There is a machine called Electronic Craniotome Burrhole, which is in use across the globe for surgery of the neuro patients, but Government Medical College and Hospital seems unaware about the development and conducts surgery, especially drilling manually," said doctor, adding that the latest machine drills the skull in half an hour, while as manual drilling takes three to four hours, in addition to risk factor. The doctor said that medical science has done marvels but still GMC Hospital is lagging years back when it comes to use of advanced technology. "Craniectomy is neurosurgical procedure that involves removing a portion of the skull in order to relieve pressure on the underlying brain. This procedure is typically done in cases where a patient has experienced a very severe brain injury that involves significant amounts of bleeding around the brain or excessive swelling of the brain," doctor said. He further added that in manual drilling there are major risks of bleeding and infection and further damage to the brain, but risk with electronic craniotome is minimal. "As previously stated, patients who require craniectomy as a life saving measure are usually in very critical condition and have in all likelihood already experienced some amount of brain damage," he said and added that manual drilling increases risk factor. The doctor further said that one such machine is available at Super Specialty Hospital Jammu, but the influx of patients is less as compared to GMC&H.
