Srinagar, other parts of Kashmir witness huge traffic jam | People of Kashmir show thumb to separatists | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report srinagar, Nov 28: Despite the fact that separatists had asked the people to observe complete shutdown on Monday, Srinagar, the summer capital of the state witnessed huge traffic jam with people spending hours in their vehicles before reaching their respective destinations. Reports said that since morning huge traffic jam was witnessed on various routes of the summer capital with long queues of vehicles lining up on different roads of the city. People faced huge inconvenience in reaching their respective destinations and had to spend hours together in their own vehicles or public vehicles. Today's rush in many areas of the Srinagar city and some other districts of Kashmir is a reminder of the fact that the protest calendar of separatists has been pushed to back burner by the masses across the length and breadth of the valley. People as such pay little heed to the programme of the separatists and are busy in carrying out their daily chores of life. "There was no sign of strike in Srinagar or any other part of Kashmir valley. Traffic both public as well as private was seen plying on most routes of summer capital. At the same time the public traffic was also seen running on most of the roads in the other districts of Kashmir valley," said Abdul Hamid, a resident. It would be in place to mention here that some of the markets in the uptown Srinagar are open since the last one month or so. Shops and commercial establishments in areas like Jawahar Nagar, Rajbagh, Baghat and Karan Nagar are open thus giving a sense of normalcy to the people. "Strange things have happened in the past and they continue to happen. One of my friends who lives in downtown Srinagar patted me and said that you did well by keeping the shop open. This friend of mine is quite upset that more than four months have gone down the drain as people resorted to continuous strike following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani," said Abdul Rahim, a shopkeeper. Pertinent to mention here separatists have been issuing protest calendar on weekly basis and have been asking the people to observe shutdown against the killing of more than 90 civilians. The people as a whole followed the protest programme for the first three months or so, but later on most of them felt that they are causing damage to their own-self by resorting to strikes on daily basis. "Today the traffic was plying on some of the routes in downtown Srinagar where a person would think twice of moving during a strike. If the shopkeepers of Lal Chowk and adjacent areas open their shops then the whole game of strike would be over. Long distance buses including the buses of State Road Transport Corporation are running on many routes. Same is the case with mini-buses and Tata Sumos," said Mehraj Ahmad, a student. |
