Leh freezes at -8.6 degrees, Srinagar -1.9 degrees | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 28: Leh, the high desert city in Jammu and Kashmir, froze as the minimum temperature witnessed a considerable drop and settled at minus 8.6 degree Celsius, while dry and chilly weather continued in Kashmir valley, including summer capital Srinagar, where night temperature recorded a drop again after fresh snowfall in the upper reaches during the past 48 hours. A Met Spokesman said here this afternoon that weather will remain dry in the state during the next 24 hours. However, during the subsequent 48 hours, there are chances of isolated rain or snow in the state. Almost all water bodies, including lakes and ponds, frozen after the minimum temperature witnessed a considerable drop in the Ladakh region. However, the authorities have already stopped supply water through taps and residents are provided water through tankers. Residents of far flung and remote areas are using spring water, which remains cold during summer and warm in winter. The Spokesman further said the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around nine degrees and minus five degrees, respectively during the next 24 hours at Leh. However, in the upper reaches, including near the border of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK) and China, the minimum temperature was recorded between minus 15 degrees to minus 25 degrees. Despite facing all odds, including hostile weather conditions, security forces remained deployed on the borders to prevent any infiltration from PoK and China. Prior to 1999 Kargil war, security forces from India and Pakistan were withdrawing during winter from the borders as the temperature goes below minus 40 degrees. Dry and chilly weather continued in the valley after snowfall on upper heights, though rain still eludes plains, including summer capital Srinagar, where sun registered its presence, accompanied by chilly winds. Srinagar also witnessed a considerable drop in the minimum temperature and settled at minus 1.9 degree, two notches below normal. The sky would be partly cloudy with haze and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 14 degree and minus 1 degree in Srinagar during the next 24 hours, the Met spokesman said. |
