SPCB seizes 30 km of polythene, imposed penality | | | Early Times Report
RAMBAN, Dec 16: A joint team of State Pollution Control Board (SPCB), Forest Protection Force (FPF) J-9 Batote and Municipal Committee Ramban carried out surprise checking in Seri, Bouli Bazar, Maitra , Batti and Karol market and seized more than 30 kg of banned polythene carry bags and compounded a penalty amounting to Rs 4200 which has been imposed on various shopkeepers during checking. The inspection team led by Divisional Officer SPCB, Ramban Kuldeep Bhan accompanied by Assistant Director FPF, A R Loan and EO MC Ramban Zubaida Parveen besides other officials of respective departments. During the checking public was also made aware about the health hazards of coloured polythene carry bags which contain various harmful chemicals like Colorants, pigments, plasticizers, antioxidants and heavy metals. Meantime shopkeepers were warned to desist from using this banned material which can attract on the spot penalty up to Rs. 5000 or imprisonment for one month Bhan urged the locals that colour used in these polythenes are mostly non food grade and leach out with other chemicals components thus contaminating food and eatables carried in these bags and can cause cancer, degeneration of brain tissue, heart enlargement etc. Besides this there are lot of environmental issues associated with the use of polythen like open burning which emits toxic gases littering pollutes soil and water bodies chocking drains and animals who eat them leading to their death. Besides emission of various compounds which are toxic to the environment and contribute to acid rain global warming ozone depletion and formation of smog which is quite prevalent now a days in major parts of northern India. |
