Early Times Report
Rajouri, Dec 18: Around two dozen poor girls have been duped by a "powerful business lobby" who got their scholarship amount of Rs 10,000 each illegally withdrawn from their respective bank accounts.
Narrating their woeful tale, a delegation of girls from village Makool in Sunderbani district said earlier this year they completed a cutting and stitching course under "Prime Minister Koshala Yojna", whereby they were supposed to get the scholarship amount at the completion of the course, offered by a private center.
"But that happened at the end of the program was that we were asked to keep signed cheques of our bank account with the center people," the girls said.
They said when three of their fellow girls got payment in their bank accounts, the other girls also visited their banks. "But we were shocked to know that our scholarship money has been withdrawn by the strong lobby of businessmen running these training centers ," the girls said.
They said out of the batch of 25 girls only three were given scholarship while as due share of other poor girls was swindled.
"This is sheer cheating. Though we approached the concerned authorities, no one came to our rescue," the girls said.
The village Sarpanch Teerath Ram said it was injustice with the girls. "This is injustice that from the Vigilance Organization to Crime Branch, every concerned department is maintaining a criminal silence over this issue," the Sarpanch said.
It is third such case of "duping of the poor girls" under the centrally sponsored scholarship program in the district. A senior official in the administration said the government must probe the matter.
Meanwhile the victims have appealed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Maneka Gandhi and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to look into the matter.
