India sacrificed 60 jawans in J&K in 2016 alone | Needed: Action Not Reaction | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 18: Defence Ministry has put in public domain the information regarding the ultimate sacrifices made by our jawans in the militant and separatist-infested Jammu & Kashmir. The figures which the Defence Ministry made public are highly disturbing and frightening as our Army suffered more casualties in 2016 than in the preceding two years. The Defence Ministry said that Army lost nearly "twice the number of soldiers in Jammu & Kashmir this year as compared to the annual toll in the last two years". The Ministry claimed that "while this mainly due to increase in ceasefire violations, counter-infiltration and Pakistan Army's Border Action Team (BAT) operating on the Line of Control (LoC), there has also been an increase in the number of soldiers killed in counter-terroriist operations in Jammu & Kashmir" As per the reports based on the Defence Ministry sources, "60 soldiers were killed in Jammu & Kashmir till December 15 this year". In 2015, the toll was 33 soldiers and in 2014, the toll was 32. "Of the 60 soldiers who died this year, 23 were killed in operations at the LoC - ceasefire violations, counter-infiltration and BAT operations. In contrast, only four soldiers died on the LoC in 2015, and five in 2014," the Defence Ministry said. "Thirty-seven soldiers were killed in counter-terrorist operations in the hinterland, up from the 29 killed in 2015 and 27 in 2014. The number of dead soldiers is higher this year due to two major terror incidents - one at Uri and another in Nagrota, where we unfortunately lost a total of 26 men," an Army official was quoted as saying. 19 soldiers were martyred by Pakistan in the Ur attack and 7 at the Nagrota terror attack. That our jawans suffered more casualties in 2016 as compared to 2014 and 2015 suggests that there were serious security lapses at some levels. The rising number of casualties also expose the claim of Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and Home Minister Rajnath Singh that the Government of India had taken all the measures to ensure that Indian jawans suffer minimum casualties and Pakistan the maximum. The statements of the Defence Minister and the Home Minister further suggest that they made statements without doing the required homework. The revelations made by the Defence Ministry have made our strategic affairs experts to say that so many deaths of our jawans took place because "India only react and not act" and this policy will not do. "Let Indian Army act and Pakistan Army react," they have opined, and also said that India has to raise price for Pakistan, if Pakistan was to brought to its knees. |
