Govt run schools continue to play parasites | Surveys unveil rotten system | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 18: The government run schools in Jammu and Kashmir continue to exhibit the dismal performance with survey coming to fore revealing how little efforts have so far been made to rectify the wrongs. A recent report published in this regard claimed that in 2015, there were 21 government run schools that registered zero percentage in the annual results. More shocking was that from most of the government high schools, there were just 3-4 students who had appeared in the class 10th annual board examinations. Such a dismal performance while putting lid over the claims of the helmsmen of ensuring quality education to the poor kids has also revealed how serious our education ministry is to prepare the young guns of the state to excel in academics. "We are worried about the working of the government schools. Though we are passing buck to the teachers but they alone cannot be held accountable for the mess. It is the government which has to take immediate steps in streamlining the entire system at the government schools," says an official in state's education ministry. He added that various suggestions have been till date flouted by the renowned educationists but all in unison have fallen to deaf ears. According to the official, there has been no implementation of any suggestion that included advices related to better administration and performance in exams. Furthermore, the lack of infrastructure at the government run schools is acting as a major spoiler in the entire process. The buildings of the government schools generally present a shabby picture with broken chairs and nasty surroundings marring the scenes. Even ahead of the winter break in Valley, there were no heating arrangements put in place in the government schools and in Summer, the situation is always more worse and worrisome. "Despite knowing everything, the government isn't keen at rectifying its mistakes. Successive regimes have never bothered to make any betterment in system of the government schools," says Junaid Lateef, a teacher. Sources within the dispensation revealed that even when the prime time of the year was lost in Kashmir's academic calendar, the government could have easily delayed the winter break in Valley so that the students could have compensated the losses. "We had suggested to the government that it should intervene in the matter so that all the arrangements are pit in place well and students are taught what they haven't during the unrest period. However, no heed was paid to the requests," says an insider in state's education department. Parents too seem to have been expressing concern over government's non serious approach in ensuring betterment in government schools. They have voiced disgruntlement over government's inaction in this regard, saying that if proper heating systems would have been installed in schools, school work could have continued up to the end of December. However, the government didn't take any measure, resulting in the announcement of winter break. "First our kids were given mass promotion, now they are being asked to stay at home. How could you expect them to study after all?" ,said by of several parents. |
