Early Times Report

Srinagar, Dec 18: After burning of schools, now looting of banks have kept security forces on tenterhooks in Kashmir. These incidents have raised serious concerns among the people in general and security forces in particular who have taken several measures to foil the attempts of gunmen who want to loot banks in the valley.
A senior police official told Early Times that the additional responsibility has been given to security forces in Kashmir in view of looting of banks.
"The security around banks has been strengthened. Some police personnel in civies have also been directed to ensure guarding of banks, ATMs and schools," the police official said. "Firstly there has been burning of schools now there are incidents of robbery. So far it has emerged that Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit is behind these incidents," the official said.
The official said they have got the CCTV footage from the bank and it has been established that Lashkar-e-Toiba is behind the bank robberies.
An official from JK Bank said that the bank will take up the issue of enhancing security of banks with the state government. "Basically it is a security issue and the matter will be taking up with the government," the official said.
Since unrest in Kashmir four incidents of robbery took place in the valley and three since the last 26 days. According to sources, over Rs.37 lakh has been looted by the masked gunmen in three different bank robberies during past 26 days.
The first robbery took place in Malpora area of Charar-e- Shareef on November 21 when four masked men robbed a bank and left with Rs.13 lakh.
The police at that time said that 11 out of the 13 lakh that was robbed consisted of the scrapped notes.
On December, 8 another bank was looted in Arihal when Rs.13 lakh was taken away by the gunmen in a broad day light.
Masked gunmen Thursday looted a J&K Bank branch in Ratnipore area of south Kashmir's Pulwama district, and fled with Rs 11 lakh. This is the third bank robbery since demonetisation, announced in November this year and fourth during the unrest in Kashmir. Police have blamed militants for these acts.
"They looted around Rs 11 lakh at gunpoint from the cash counter. A manhunt has been launched to nab the robbers," a police officer said.
A top police official said it was difficult to provide security to each bank branch given their huge numbers. "At present to ensure security to every bank branch is not possible. But the solution to this robbery menace is to neutralize the robbers at earliest," he said.
