Early Times Report

Rajouri, Dec 18: People in many areas in Rajouri district are facing acute shortage of safe drinking water for the last many months.
The main reasons behind the scarcity of drinking water is prolonged dry spell (no rains for the last more than 45 days),casual approach towards their official duties by the employees of PHE department, defunct water supply schemes, very low voltage supplied for the water lifting motors and others.
Many water supply schemes got dried , many became defunct and under construction water supply schemes started many years ago still facing many hurdles including shortage of funds for their completion.
Inhabitants of Palma, Nagrota , Maira, Chaprian , Danna etc situated in the vicinity of Rajouri town have been facing acute shortage of water and have been holding protest demonstrations against the concerned officials for the last many months.
"Annoyed over the casual approach of the concerned and senior officers of the department including Executive Engineer in mitigating their water crises problems, inhabitants of village Palma on Friday had stopped the cavalcade of Ch Zulfikar Ali Choudhry, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA) who is also MLA of Darhal Assembly Constituency under which these villages fall" said a source.
People blocked the road by putting empty vessels and big stones and forced the minister to talk to them.
After paying patient hearing to the problems faced by the people Ch Zulfikar Ali directed the deputy commissioner and Executive Engineer, HE, who were accompanying the Minister, to immediately look into the problem and provide water to them at the earliest.
Minister also directed the Deputy Commissioner to keep regular monitoring on the working of the officers/ officials as for as people's complaints are concerned.
Naseeb Bano ,Mohd Akhter and others resident of Kheora under Rajouri Municipality alleged that till today PHE department has failed to lay pipes in this ward and people are collecting water from a natural source situated near the district hospital after spending long time in the queue.
"For the last more than one month the motors installed at New Source Station at Kalakot have got damaged due to poor maintenance and low voltage and due to that water supply in many areas in Kalakot town and in its peripheral areas have been snapped" said Ankit Kumar and Som Raj.
The matter was taken up with the senior officers of the PHE department but they failed to initiate any immediate action in mitigating the problems of the people.
