Dal Lake, taps freeze again as Srinagar records coldest night at minus 5

Srinagar, Dec 18 : Majority water bodies, including world famous Dal Lake, continue to freeze partially, as the minimum temperature recorded further drop and settled at minus 4.9 degree, coldest of the winter so far.
Leh and border town of Kargil region continued to reel under severe cold as the minimum temperature remained below freezing temperature in the Ladakh region, where water bodies remained frozen.
A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that there is possibility of light rain and snow over higher reaches in the Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours. However, during the subsequent 48 hours, weather will remain dry which could result in further drop in the minimum temperature though maximum temperature will be near normal though cold winds will also continue.
The famed Dal Lake was partially frozen again after the minimum temperature witnessed further drop due to clear sky and dry weather during the past 24 hours. The water body near banks and interior parts had frozen again due to chilly strong winds. However, the frozen parts are melting as the day progress due to near normal maximum temperature but in the interior parts frozen parts gets more strong.
The famed water body was frozen completely in 1965 when a jeep was driven on the frozen surface one end to another end. Similarly Lake was again frozen in 1987 and authorities had to deploy police personnel on the bank to avoid any accident. However, tourists and locals were walking on the frozen surface and taking photographers while young people were playing cricket and hockey. Taps were also frozen at several places, particularly in the outskirts, affecting water supply in the morning.
Srinagar, where life returned to normal today after separatists announced relaxation in strike from today till Thursday, recorded coldest night of the season after the minimum temperature witnessed further drop and settled at minus 4.9 degree, four notches below normal. The earlier lowest was minus 4.5 degree recorded yesterday. Famous Sunday Market in the heart of the city also witnessed large number of customers has hundreds of vendors have put up their stalls, selling from a simple needle to carpets and other woolen and warm cloths.
Met spokesman said the sky would be partly cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be 9 degree and minus 4 degree respectively during the next 24 hours in the city.
World famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir was coldest in the valley though the minimum temperature has witnessed surge. Against yesterdays minus 7.3 degree, coldest of the winter so far, the night temperature at Pahalgam was minus 5.9 degree, three notches above normal.
Kupwara in north Kashmir was second coldest in the valley after the minimum temnperature was recorded minus 5, three notches below normal followed by Qazigund minus 3.6 degree, three notches below normal and Kokernag minus 2.3 degree.
Interestingly the world famous ski resort witnessed surge in the minimum temperature and settled at minus 3 degree, a notch above normal because of cloudy sky during the night.
Leh in Ladakh continue to freeze though the minimum temperature witnessed a surge of about two notches. Against yesterdays minus 13.6 degree, coldest of the season so far, the minimum temperature there was 12 degree.
Sky would be mainly clear and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 8 degree and minus 13 degree respectively during the next 24 hours at Leh.
The border town of Kargil on Srinagar-Leh national highway recorded minus 9.4 degree, he said. However, the mercury was between minus 15 degree and minus 30 degree in the upper reaches, including on the border with Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) and China, where troops remained deployed to foil any infiltration bid.
