Rajouri, Dec 18: About 40 people were affected due to leakage of chlorine gas from a water filter plant installed inside the military engineer services (MES) office near new bus stand at Sunderbani near here today. According to eyewitnesses, locals started complaining about breathlessness, vomiting and nausea at about 6.30 pm. "Panic gripped the area and people started running to safer areas without any knowledge of what had happened. Initially about 18 people were admitted to the Sunderbani sub-district hospital (SDH) with complaints of vomiting and nausea while a few complained about breathlessness," said tehsildar Vijay Kumar. After getting information about the leakage of Chlorine from a cylinder installed inside the Army's Water Purifier Plant, army was called and people were asked to leave the affected area, he added. "At the time of filing this report MES engineers were on the job to stop further leakage of the gas while all the affected people have been admitted to the hospital," the tehsildar said. Dr Mohammed Younus, Chief Medical Officer, said about 40 people complained about breathlessness and irritation in the eyes. Out of them, the condition of five was critical and they were being provided treatment, including oxygen, he informed. "All the affected people are stable and responding to treatment. They will under observation for at least 12 hours," the CMO said. |
