Respect people’s mandate: New legislators urge top leaders | 'Re-election no solution, Govt formation only way out' | | Muhammad Mukaram Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 23: : As the negotiations over government formation in Jammu and Kashmir are showing no signs of conclusion and breakthrough seems to be eluding, newly elected legislators are apparently losing patience and are not in favour of re-elections being held in the state. Several newly- elected PDP and BJP MLAs are of the opinion that parties should respect the mandate given by the people rather than imposing one more election on the masses. “We won many seats by a narrow margin. There is no guarantee that we will be able to retain those seats in case of re-election. So having another poll is not practical,” said a PDP MLA, Zahoor Ahmed Mir. “We have spent a lot of money on campaigning. If elections are held again, the same amount of money would have to be generated. So financially too, it is not a viable solution,” Mir added. There is no option of re-polls top leaders of party should reach on conclusion and form the Government , “We the MLAs are under tremendous public pressure as PDP has emerged as the single largest party in recent assembly elections,” said a PDP MLA, on condition of anonymity. However, some BJP MLAs in Jammu region want re-election. “These MLAs are riding high on Modi wave and believe people who voted for Congress and other parties in the recent assembly elections would change their mind and vote for BJP if re-elections are held,” said a source. BJP’s JK affairs in-charge Avinash Rai Khanna had also told media recently that they don’t want to sit in the opposition for obvious reasons. All the 25 legislators of the party had forwarded a detailed proposal to BJP chief on government formation. “We can’t ignore what our legislators want and what our voters in Jammu want,” he had claimed. In order to avoid public wrath in future especially in Jammu region, BJP has left no stone unturned to ensure that a BJP becomes the part of the next government in the state. |
