SRINAGAR, Jan 23: Protests broke out in some parts of summer capital during a strike call given by a religious organization against the publication of blasphemous caricatures in the Charlie Hebdo magazine.
Some protesters got injured due to the action of police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel.
At the same time the authorities enforced restrictions in the Maisuma locality and some other areas of the city in order to foil a rally supposed to be led by Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chairman, Mohammad Yaseen Malik. Malik was arrested by the police along with some of his supporters during the preceding night.
Police and CRPF personnel maintained vigil across the summer capital in order to thwart protests against the publication of the blasphemous caricatures.
Donning riot gear the police and CRPF personnel were posted in large numbers especially in areas of downtown Srinagar and some other areas falling in the uptown.
Reports said that soon after the Friday prayers protests broke out in some of the city areas like SafaKadal, Seki Dafar, KhankahiMoulla, ZainaKadal and FatehKadal. The protesters were raising slogans against the editors of the magazine and demanded stern action against them. The protesters demanded that the magazine editors should be barred from further publication of the blasphemous cartoons.
In the ZainaKadal area protesters mainly comprising of JKLF activists and workers clashed with police and CRPF personnel.
The protesters tried to march towards the KhankahiMoulla area and assemble there to be a part of a bigger protest demonstration against the blasphemous acts.
The police and CRPF personnel stopped the protesters from marching towards KhankahiMoulla and both the groups clashed with each other. Police and CRPF personnel resorted to lathi charge against the protesters.
This was followed by lobbing of smoke shells in which some of the protesters sustained injuries.
Protests were also reported from the Seki Dafar, SafaKadal, FatehKadal and KhankahiMoulla areas of the downtown Srinagar. At these places the protesters shouted slogans against the editors of Charlie Hebdo magazine and termed the publication of caricatures as infringement on the religious rights across the globe.
The protesters burnt down the effigies of the editors of the magazine and carried out strong protests.
At the same time shutdown was observed across the Kashmir valley against the incident. Public transport was off the roads in most of the areas in Srinagar and other districts of the Kashmir valley. Attendance in the government offices and banks was very thin and there was skeletal movement of private transport in Kashmir.
Residents of Maisuma and adjoining areas were put under undeclared curfew as the authorities imposed restrictions in these areas. The people were not allowed to move out and in some of the Masjids across the valley the Friday prayers could not be organized.
