Local VC for JU unlikely, competence sole criterion | | | Syed JunaidHashmi Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 23: In what could be termed as major development, University of Jammu is likely to have non-local, non-Jammuites as Vice-Chancellor (VC). Sources said that more than 70 people have applied for this prestigious position which includes almost all eligible Professors of the seven universities of Jammu and Kashmir. They have submitted their detailed CVs and are now, anxiously waiting for the search committee to meet. If the sources are to be believed, the committee members have not only received CVs of the eligible professors but also copies of the allegations and complaints against some of the contenders. They added that even the Governor N.N.Vohra's office is aware of the complaints against some of the eligible contenders. Not only this, sources said that Vohra's office knows well that appointment of any controversial figure as VC of Jammu University is likely to snowball and may well annoy the political dispensation which would be taking over anytime after January 26. The search panel is likely to meet in the first week of February in New Delhi. They added that the high profile committee which has been constituted to find VC for Jammu University is unlikely to consider faculty members with tainted or controversial past. Sources further said that a PIL is being filed in the High Court seeking directions for the search committee to go purely by merit and ensure people with controversial and tainted past are not appointed too institutions of higher learning. Competence and intellect should be the only criterion for appointing people to the institutions of higher learning. This is likely to put additional pressure on the committee for going purely by merit and desisting from making political appointments. This is despite the fact that most of the university faculty members who have applied for this prestigious position have been meeting top functionaries of BJP and pleading with them to put pressure on the Governor N.N.Vohra for appointing them for the top job. All have been claiming of having met BJP National President Amit Shah, Finance Minister ArunJaitley and Minister in the PMO Dr. Jatinder Singh, who is also MP from Doda-UdhampurLokSabha seat. They have been saying that these three top functionaries have promised them of taking up their cause with the Governor and ensuring that they are handed over this prestigious position. One of the claimants of prestigious post has even been meeting an ex-student leader in the evening hours almost as a matter of routine, who according to sources has promised to get him appointed as VC of Jammu University (JU). Another one has been talking of having close relations with entire BJP top brass and is saying that his appointment is almost done. It needs to be mentioned here that the three-member Search Committee, headed by ArunNagvekar, former Vice-Chancellor of the Pune University and Ex-Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), was constituted by Governor N.N Vohra in October 2014. Vohra is Chancellor of Jammu University. Prof B.B. Bhattacharya, former Vice-Chancellor of JawaharLal Nehru University (JNU) and senior IAS officer R.P.Aggarwal, who has retired as Secretary in the Human Resource Development Ministry, are other two members of the Search panel. Pertinent to mention here that consequent upon sudden resignation of Prof. Mohan Paul Singh Ishar as then Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University, ex-BOPEE Chairman Prof R.D.Sharma was given charge of VC on October 31 pursuant to the approval accorded by Governor-cum-Chancellor. Since Prof. Isharrelinquished the charge of Vice-Chancellor around three months prior to completion of his tenure, Prof Sharma was asked to carry out duties of JU VC till a permanent one is not appointed.
