Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 23: Authorities have failed to send a family of six to its native place after rescuing it from the clutches of a brick kiln owner, who had allegedly turned the family into bonded labourers.
The district administration Kathua, on the complaint of an NGO Voice for Rights and a social group Social Organization for Universal Living (SOUL) had freed the family of bonded labourHira Singh along with his wife, three daughters and one infant from the claws a brick kiln owner in Kathua district but later on adopted the "shed responsibility and problem fixes itself attitude" as after a lapse of over 8 days the family is still living in the premises of Social Welfare office.
The "lethargic attitude" of the district administration can be gauged from the fact that at a time when exams are coming nearer, the three school going children are unable to attend their classes at their native place Gurdaspur in Punjab.
As per the information available with the Early Times, HiraLal was earlier working in Kashmir in a brick kiln but after the devastating floods in September last year, he shifted to Kathua and started working there along with five to six persons.
Sources said with the passage of time, all the persons started migrating to other places after taking advance from the brick kiln owner and Hira was jeopardized for their act of cheating.
Later, when family of Hira visited him in Kathua ,the brick kiln owner forcibly took the family of HiraLal as bonded laborers in his brick kiln and made them work there.
They were later on released after the complaint of the NGO and Social group but the district administration which is till date moving at the snail's pace has failed to send this family back to Gurdaspur in neighbouring Punjab.
SSP Kathua, PawanParihar when contacted said, "Complaint has been received and the same has been forwarded to Rajbagh for investigation."
