NC, Congress must unite to get one seat each: Mustafa | Omar in dilemma again as Kamaal lobbies for RS seat | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 23: Another family feud has erupted within the National Conference (NC) as its additional general secretary has started lobbying for the RS seat, asking the party men that he deserves it more than anybody else in the party. Sources privy to this development told Early Times that the brother of NC patron Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal who recently lost the Gulmarg assembly segment along with his security deposit, is making serious efforts for his entry in Rajya Sabha. Sources said that Kamaal has already held meetings with senior NC leaders including general secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar and has telephoned his brother Dr Farooq who is undergoing treatment in London. "Dr Kamaal wants the RS posts and strives that NC must join hands with the Congress along with some independents so that at least one from NC and one from Congress could make it to Rajya Sabha post," sources said, adding that Kamaal wants his name to be nominated by the party for the post. Sources disclosed that the NC has already held a meeting of its core group in which alliance with the Congress for the RS seats has been thoroughly discussed. The leaders in unison have strived that the alliance is must so that at least one person from NC could hold the post. Feeling it is the right time to hit the nail on its head, Dr Kamaal who is also the uncle of the former chief minister Omar Abdullah called his brother and suggested his name for the RS seat. Though Omar, according to sources, wants his dad for the post, hectic efforts have been made by Kamaal within the party to ensure his name in the list. Meanwhile, when contacted, Dr Kamaal told Early Times that for the RS seats, there can be an alliance between Congress and NC so that one from each party could be sent to the parliament. When asked who would be a preferable choice of his party, a guarded Kamaal said the press would come to know at an appropriate time. It could be me, Kamaal said, taking a long breath and was quick to add, 'or anyone else who deserves the post.' When asked Omar has hinted that Dr farooq would be the party candidate, Kamaal said he would be happy if he is sent to RS. "See, we need to have an alliance with the Congress along with other independents so that we can send one person from each party to Rajya Sabha. It is not like the other way round. Alone, we both cannot do anything we have to team up." When asked about the reports of him wanting to be nominated for the seat, NC's firebrand leader says it is for the party to decide and not by any individual. "He must be a seasoned leader and not a mere new face. He should have ample experience of the legislature so that he could represent the state well," Kamaal said while refusing to divulge any further information. Interestingly, NC which is known for its dynastic rule in the state always strives for Abdullah family to remain in the forefront. In 2008 elections when Kamaal lost the Gulmarg seat, he was made to contest again from Hazartbal assembly segment of Srinagar after Dr Farooq left it vacant. Crises in the party had emerged at that time also as NC had sidelined Mohammad Sayeed Akhoon, a former MLA of the turf who has left the seat during polls for Dr Farooq. Later, it was Kamaal- the beloved brother that was accorded the seat and was made MLA of Hararatbal while Akhoon was left in lurch. Sources in the party said that Dr Farooq would not prefer to go for the RS seat, it is going to be Kamaal who would thank his stars as there is no one else left in Abdullah family to whom the honour would be accorded. |
