Why February 7 is crucial for PDP and BJP ?
1/23/2015 11:22:37 PM

February 7 is crucial for the BJP in Delhi
where the polling for the Assembly election is
to be held on the same day.The day is crucial for the BJP and the PDP in Jammu and Kashmir where election to the four Rajya Sabha seats is to be held on the same day.Why crucial ? It is so because the BJP faces a serious challenge from the AAP led by Arvind Kejriwal. In the previous election in 2013 the BJP had won 31 seats five short of simple majority because the AAP had won 28 seats thereby preventing the BJP from forming the Government.Surprisingly the Congress which had remained in power for 15 years had won only eight seats.Though this time the BJP has admitted a number of stalwarts from the AAP besides former top police officer,Kiran Bedi, the party has been rocked by groupism because a section of senior leaders have not relished the idea of allotting party tickets to the new entrants. Some leaders felt upset over the way Kiran Bedi was being projected as the Chief Ministerial candidate notwithtstanding the fact that the BJP has not named any leader as chief Ministerial candidate.Right from May last the BJP has been scoring one success after another. The success story was written in the Lok Sabha election in which the BJP trampled the Congress to gain power in the centre. Then came the success in Haryana, Maharashtra and its maiden feat in the shape of winning 25 seats from the region of Jammu in the Assembly elections. It is in this context people have developed interest in the Delhi Assembly election simply to watch if the BJP is able to unseat the Congress and the AAP.In fact it faced a challenge from the AAP and not from the Congress..
For the BJP and for the PDP February 7 is important because one would watch keenly whether the two parties are able to forge an alliance for countering the possible alliance of the Congress and the National Conference during the election on four Rajya Sabhe seats from Jammu and Kashmir. If the BJP and the PDP join hands for contesting the Rajya Sabha election on four seats it may set the stage for the formation of the Government in Jammu and Kashmir.
An alliance between the PDP and the BJP during the Rajya Sabha election can prove beneficial for both the parties. Once they join hands the total number of MLAs, on whom they can bank on during the polling, can touch over 60 which includes the support from some six to seven independent legislators. This could help the BJP and the PDP to win two seats each as was the case in 2009 when the NC-Congress alliance won all the four seats in the Rajya Sabha.Though the Congress is trying to seek support from the NC for winning atleast one seat for Ghulam Nabi Azad this alliance may not be able to cut much ice because their strength may not cross 27 MLAs.
If the BJP and the PDP failed to cobble an alliance for contesting the four Rajya Sabha seats the chances for framing an alliance between the two for Government formation could become bleak. But both the PDP and the BJP need to understand that even if the poll resulted in a fractured mandate people had voted in favour of a change. And people braved bad weather and militant threats to vote out the Congress and the National Conference. Now that the PDP has emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly with 28 seats followed by the BJP which had won 25 seats it would be an insult to the voters if the PDP failed to forge an alliance with the BJP.
The PDP had the option of framing an alliance with the NC and the Congress for Government formation but its leadership rejected the offer of support from both the NC and the Congress.Once the support offer was turned down it had left the PDP with only one option of cobbling an alliance for the formation of the Government. If the PDP fails in doing so it would be held responsible for having forced a fresh election on the people of the state. How ?
The state is under the Governor's rule which can last for a period of six months. And if by that period the mainstream political parties failed to form a Government two alternatives are left before the central Government. The state may be placed either under the President's rule or the Assembly would be dissolved by the Governor to be followed by f resh elections.
This way the choice is with the PDP,which is supposed to play a big brother role as far as Government formation is concerned.Once a civilian Government was established it could usher in a new phase of development of the state as under a PDP-BJP ruling coalition the BJP led NDA Government in the centre would be quite willing to provide liberal financial assistance to the state in improving the sectors of agriculture, horticulture, industry besides health and education. And the exercise on framing an alliance between PDP and the BJP may be revived after the results of Delhi Assembly were out.
