Early Times Report

Srinagar, Mar 13: The opposition parties in Jammu and Kashmir are clueless over the measures over which it could counter Jammu and Kashmir government as it proposed to summon the budget session of the state Legislature from March 18, this year. Sources revealed that hectic deliberations are going on with the National Conference and state Congress with both the parties putting heads together to corner the new state dispensation. "So far there seems to be no major point about which we could corner the government. But at the same time, we have to admit that it is the first session of the assembly after the recently held polls in the state. We have to pull our socks to remain on tenterhooks to mark our presence," one of the senior NC leaders while pleading for anonymity told Early Times. He added that the party is busy at present to discuss the forthcoming strategy. Meanwhile, Congress seems to be out of the gear. It has no voice at present that could save its broken citadel in the state. A Congress leader divulged that party's top brass in the state was summoned by the AICC president Sonia Gandhi who discussed the latest political trend in the state and strategy to counter the BJP- PDP bonhomie. "The state Congress chief G.A. Mir along with other senior party leaders held detailed discussions with the Congress high command including Sonia Gandhi. All Soniaji wanted from the state leadership was to counter the BJP in JK and stop its further march," sources said, adding that high command also wanted Congress MLAs to display stern reaction towards the release of Masarat Alam and government's plan to release the political prisoners. Sources said that Congress would take on the BJP over its alliance of compromise with the PDP and would also counter the party for 'deceiving people during polls'. Meanwhile, NC is still in a fix over what to counter and about what to prefer silence. "NC wants to remain in good books of the separatists in valley.
It doesn't want to perturb the camp by opposing Alam's release. What the party would do in the next assembly session entirely depends on its leadership which has asked its MLAs to wait till the final decision in taken," NC leader said. The Jammu and Kashmir government on March 2 proposed to the Governor to summon the budget session of the state Legislature from March 18. This will be first budget session of PDP-BJP government led by Mufti Mohmmad Sayeed, which assumed power in the state. The cabinet that met under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed advised the Governor to summon and address the joint session of the state Legislative Assembly on March 18. The chief minister has also advised the Governor NN Vohra to fix March 18 as the date for holding elections to the post of Assembly Speaker.
The Governor has also been advised to call upon the elected members of the Legislative Assembly to make and subscribe oath on March 17.
Meanwhile, the chief minister also advised the Governor to appoint Mohammad Shafi Uri as Pro-tem Speaker to discharge the functions of the Speaker till the election of the Speaker of the Legislative assembly was held.
