Order issued 2-days before new Govt took over | Dr Rafiq Pampori gets 3-yrs extension | | Fazal Khan
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 13: Just two days before the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government took over the reins of the state, the principal of the Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar Dr Rafiq Pampori, who was due to attain superannuation on Feb 28, 2015, managed to get yet another extension. Sources told Early Times some officials in Health and Medical Education Department, issued an office memo vide number A/73(2014)298 dated 26-2-2015 granting three year extension to Principal Government Medical College Srinagar, Dr Rafiq Pampori. Pertinently, Dr Pampori had managed to get his services extended by one year in 2014 and this time around he has been given a three year extension. The insiders said that Dr Pampori getting yet another extension has disappointed the senior faculty members who were waiting for a chance to serve the GMC Srinagar. "Dr Pampori is a connected man. He managed to get an extension when state was under Governor's rule and there was no political dispensation at the helm," insiders added. A doctor while talking to Early Times said that H&ME Department issued the extension order in a hurry and did not wait for the new government to be formed. "The principal used all his influence to ensure that he gets extension before the new dispensation takes over," he added. The doctors described the extension to GMC principal as the blatant instance of favouritism. "Dr Pampori managing a 3-year extension means that many competent doctors who could have got a chance to serve the GMC as a principal would retire as senior faculty members," doctors added. Sources said that scores of para-medical students couldn't get through their annual examination due to the mistake committed by the evaluators. "The evaluators committed a blunder and indulged in wrong evaluation of examination papers. Instead of taking action against the said evaluators, the Principal in league with Registrar GMC detained these students and wasted their one precious year," they said. These students have been visiting the GMC regularly to meet the Principal and the Registrar but both of them have denied meeting these aggrieved students. "They (Principal and Registrar) know it very well that students were detained for no fault of theirs and they have no valid reason to explain why they were detained," sources added. "Work culture is at its lowest ebb from past many years at GMC Srinagar and incompetent people who are in the good books of the Principal are calling the shots," they alleged. It is in place to mention here that erstwhile NC-Cong government had imposed a blanket ban on granting extensions or re-employing the retired officials. However, that order remained confined to papers only as many influential people were either re-employed or their services were extended. "What is astounding is that Dr Pampori managed to get an extension when state was under Governor's rule. The order was not made public till the new dispensation took over. One hopes that new government takes a note of the issue and ends this extension culture," said a doctor. |
