"I will not wear an apron and put my patients' lives on fatal risk" | Dr Gurmeet dares Lal Singh to challenge her to wear apron, would move court on Monday | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 13: "I dare minister Lal Singh to challenge me for wearing apron. I will prove it through medical legalities as to why a psychiatric doctor is not advised to wear apron to save himself/ herself as well the patient for getting into fatal risks," said Dr Gurmeet Kour, Registar Psychiatrist hospital who has charged the minister for health and medical education to have outraged the modesty of a medical practitioner in full public view. Dr Gurmeet Kour cited the universally renowned medical journal's findings on the white coat turning out to be a psychological barrier between the patient and the doctor that deepens the cleavage between the both and sometimes even gives a reason to the patient to charge violently , lose control and end into a fatal incident. She referred to Open Journal of psychiatry under the head "Religious Wear (Uniforms) in Psychiatry by Helen Bright Vol.4 No.2, Pub. Date: April 15, 2014 and revised from time to time that contains a comprehensive details of the uniform code in medical practice and clinically terms the use of 'aprons and white coats' not advisable for the psychiatric patients to keep their patients in good humor and health. A text quote from the journal reads: With social changes in the 1960s and 1970s in United Kingdom mental health practice was changed from wearing of uniforms to casual smart wear for mental health workers. the change in dress for nurses led to a decrease in deviant behaviour (particularly violent incidents) and patient estrangement and an increase in the number of nurses in whom patients could confide. Researchers showed that the greatest rates of maladaptive behaviours occurred during the white uniforms condition followed by the optional and street clothes conditions, respectively. In UK psychiatrists, mental health nurses, social workers and administrators do not wear uniforms because these are considered to be a barrier to trust and communication. In addition, general practitioners, paediatricians and many medical consultants do not wear white coats. FURTHER 3.1.1 READS : It has already been established by most scientific research that no uniforms should be worn in mental health setting. Thus one finds that doctors, nurses, social workers and administrators in England have not worn any uniforms for at least thirty years. Uniforms are a barrier to communications as in "us and them". With impaired communication there is a much decreased chance of effective diagnosis and treatment. The consequences of wearing uniform defeat the purpose of employment. Gurmeet Kour who talked exclusively with early Times said that after the 'indecent' behavior by the minister, she approached the Bakshinagar SHO to file the FIR , but was given lame excuse of certain need of following 'legal cell' before filing an FIR. She even said that a rank of SP in police too told her that filing an FIR against a cabinet minister needs some legal view point, which she said was more satirical than disgusting to her. "However the SHO had assured me couple of days' before he can come to some conclusion on filing the FIR against the minister," said Dr Gurmeet and added that since today was the last day and she had received no response from the police. Dr Gurmeet said that her optional move now would be to move court against the minister and she would be filing a complaint against Lal Singh on Monday. The dare devil medico even said that she would not wear apron at any cost that can land her patients (mentally sick ) into fatal troubles that can take their lives. As usual since the BJP state cadre has not come up with any clarification or justification on the minister's behaviors, various social, medical and other organizations have launched a crusade against the minister and demanded his ouster from the ministry and the party. "Had he (Lal Singh) come up with a truckloads of medicines to Jammu and Kashmir hospitals as his goowill gesture to his department for having become the minister caring for his patients, he would have been received with highest esteem. In Cong-NC regime too he was more particular about the female doctors' hairdos and missing aprons, in BJP-PDP too he is treading the old track," said one of the doctor wishing not to be named. Another said that before giving a particular ministerial charge to a particular person, his qualification and technical expertise should be gauged first rather than 'selling out' portfolios. |
