Powerful minister bats for chairmanship of LC for his friend | Mir, Madni likely to get senior positions in PDP | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 7: As People's Democratic Party patron and Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, refused to accommodate his defeated MLAs in the Legislative Council, party president Mehbooba Mufti is contemplating to shoulder the organisational responsibility to at least two former legislators. Sources in the PDP said that after the name of Mohammad Sartaj Madni was dramatically withdrawn from the list of party nominations to the Upper House on Monday evening, Mehbooba is devising a damage control mechanism by way of accommodating two of the four party legislators in the organization. Rafi Ahmad Mir, ex-MLA Pahalgam, is tipped to get the post of senior vice president in the party while Madni is also considered for a higher rank in the organizational structure, the sources said. They said another former legislator Peerzada Mansoor Hussain is likely to be made chairman of some important corporation. However, there is no word from the party about two other former legislators Dr. Shafi Ahmad and Abdul Gaffar Sofi. Pertinently, senior PDP leader and former legislator Nizamuddin Bhat was the made general secretary of the party along with Mehboob Iqbal and Daman Bhasin last week. Mehbooba has "discussed the issue with her father Mufti Sayeed and there is a consensus that Rafi Mir and Sartaj Madni should be given organizational responsibility," the sources told Early Times. They said that announcement to this effect was expected anytime. "Though Rafi was offered chairmanship of some corporation, he is likely to opt for a position in the organizational structure of the party," the sources said. Meanwhile, rumours are rife in the power corridors in Jammu about PDP nominating a little known and illiterate member as chairman of the LC. Inayat Ali, who made it to the Upper House against the reserved seat of Kargil on PDP nomination, is believed to be close to one of the most influential ministers who is pleading his case before the Muftis. "Chairman of the Council is a constitutional post and the member elected as chairman should at least be a person who knows constitution and can run the business of the House in accordance with the rules," the sources said. They said that the same minister who would accuse former National Conference regime of eroding the institutions is pleading for an illiterate man who spells "House as Hose" and "Number as Noo". "This will be an insult to this institutions if the member in question is nominated as chairman of the Upper House," the sources added. |
