People of Jammu seething with anger | Surrendering AIIMS for power | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 7: The people of Jammu region are seething with anger. Their anger is directed more towards the BJP-led led NDA Government and than towards Kashmiri parties. They are charging the Narendra modi government of going back on its commitment that an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-like institution be established in Jammu. Their charge is well-founded and cannot be brushed aside. For, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had on February 28 clearly told the Lok Sabha during his second budget speech that Jammu will get 1600-crore AIIMS-like institution and Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Jitendra Singh, who is from Jammu, had went to Arun Jaitley to congratulate him for his announcement. Jitendra Singh had also made a statement to that effect the same day. What happened within the next few hours which made the BJP change its mind is not yet known. But what is known is that the very next day, when the PDP-BJP coalition government was formed, the people of Jammu region were bluntly told that Kashmir will get the AIIMS and Jammu will get Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Indian Institute of Management (IIM). Actually, that day, the Agenda of Alliance was released by the Chief Minister in the presence of BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh and it made the startling revelation that something happened during the night that worked against Jammu. The BJP, which had won 25 seats from Jammu on the Jammu-specific planks, surrendered the AIIMS to Kashmir and established that it was worse than the Congress, which in the past did leave no stone unturned to jeopardize the genuine interests of the people of Jammu region. The BJP took a complete U-turn knowing it fully that Kashmir already had an AIIMS-like institution in the form of Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medial Sciences and also a well-equipped Medical College and Hospital in Srinagar. The BJP was so hungry for power that it turned insensitive and ignored the fact that the Jammu Medical College and Hospital was ill-equipped and under-staffed and the ailing people from the region had to go to Delhi, Ludhiana, Chandigarh or Mumbai for medical treatment. The manner in which the BJP did a U-turn and meekly surrendered has shocked and angered the people of Jammu region. But, it appears, the power has gone into the head of the BJP and it is in a self-destruction mode. It is not taking cognizance of the changing mood in Jammu and the result is that more and more people are distancing themselves from what they term as a "party of bluffers and sellers". |
