Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Apr 7 : Employees of the Urban Local Bodies department today threatened to carry out an agitation if the government does not fulfill their demands by April 9. Some of the employees were arrested by police as they tried to march towards the office of Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir to submit a memorandum. This morning scores of the employees of the Urban Local Bodies assembled here at the Press Enclave. The protesters led by Manzoor Ahmad Pampori, President Urban Local Bodies Employees United Forum (ULBEUF) raised slogans against the alleged indifference of state government towards their demands. Some of the employees were carrying lanterns in their hands as a mark of protest and they said that despite repeated requests the people at helm have done nothing to fulfill their demands. They accused the successive state governments of ignoring their genuine demands and said that they have been pushed to the wall. As part of their programme the protesters tried to break free the cordon of police personnel and march towards the office of Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir in order to submit their memorandum containing the demands. However, the cops did not allow them to move ahead as a result there was a minor scuffle between the two parties. During the melee some of the employees tried to give a slip to the police but still then they were not successful in this regard. These employees along with some others were taken into preventive custody and lodged in the nearby police station. They were released later in the day by the police. The police action was criticized by the ULBEUF saying that the act was totally uncalled for. Talking to media persons, Manzoor said that a meeting would be held on April 9 and during the same further course of action would be charted out. He said that state government has not released the first quarter of devolution/grant in aid for the salary of the employees. He said that arrears of sixth pay commission have not been released in favour of urban local bodies' employees. The ULBEUF President said that sweepers should be regularized in the department adding that departmental promotion committee meetings should be held regularly. He said that there are many other demands which have remained pending over the last many years. |
