Fresh attacks remind Sopore of hay days of militancy | | | S.Tahir-Ul Haq Early Times Report
BARAMULLA, June 13: A series of attacks carried out by unidentified gunmen in Sopore town has created fear psychosis among the general public, while as non availability of recharge facilities in the town has also caused huge inconvenience to the prepaid mobile users. Following the killing of two separatist activists' government forces says that a single group is carrying out these attacks in Baramulla district. In an apparent hint towards newly formed Lashkar-e Islam militant outfit, police on Saturday said that all the attacks since last month in Sopore town of Baramulla district have been carried out by a single group. According to sources , 'police have got various clues in the recent attacks on telecommunication installations employees and activist of Hurriyat Conference headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani. A senior police official said that, "it is the same group which carried out earlier attacks, though we have got some clues and these incidents are interlinked. The fresh phase of killings of Hurriyat activists started soon after Lashkar-e-Islam asked Geelani to probe his own ranks vis-à-vis militant assassinations. Before Lashkar-e-Islam's statement, Geelani had stated that the outfit has been floated by Indian secret agencies to "defame freedom movement" and had claimed to have "evidence". United Jihad Council, an amalgam of militant outfits operating in Kashmir, also termed the Lashkar-e-Islam "creation of Indian agencies". But, the new militant outfit urged the UJC to "probe properly". The official said that they have already detained several suspects in connection with the killing of Altaf-ur-Rehman, a Hurriyat activist shot dead on Monday. "We are questioning them but no one has been formally arrested so far," he said. He said the police are working to neutralize the group and expressed hope that the killing spree would soon end. It is important to mention here that June 9 unidentified gunmen killed an employee of health department Altaf Rehman Sheikh 45, Son of Mohammad Yousf Sheikh near New Colony in Sopore on Tuesday, Altaf was a Hurriyat Activist. While as Khurshid Ahmed Bhat a shopkeeper who was shot dead by unidentified gunmen at Bomai Sopore area of North Kashmir's Baramulla district on June 12. Nazir Ahmad of Sopore town who is perusing MBA from Pune College said that, "it is better to leave the place at the earliest, one feels that 1990 era has returned back to the valley. "I have booked an air ticked and will leave the place day after tomorrow, I had come here to see my ailing parents and but they are also insisting me to leave the place, because the recent attacks recalls of Ikhwan culture in the state. Meanwhile non availability of recharge facilities in the town has also caused huge inconvenience to the prepaid mobile users. Local residents of Sopore town said that people are recharging their SIM cards from other districts of Kashmir valley. However they said that most of the towers in Sopore town are not working and people are going to the nearby hilly areas to use their phones. |
