Hurriyat led by Mirwaiz on crossroads, expels Agha Syed Budgami | Shia leader may join mainstream party | | Early Times Report Srinagar, June 13: A few days after a prominent Shia leader Agha Syed Hassan Budgami termed Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq as "one man party", the conglomerate on Saturday expelled him from the amalgam. Sources told Early Times the decision to expel Agha Syed Hassan was taken as a facing saving measure by the moderate Hurriyat Conference as Hassan had decided to quit Hurriyat the day he raised the banner of revolt. He said that many separatists like Agha Syed Hassan are fed up of separatist politics and are planning to say goodbye to the separatist politics as they have realized that it's not taking them anywhere. "Agha Syed Hassan is in touch with a prominent mainstream party and is likely to join it," said a source. Earlier this week Agha had raised the banner of revolt against Mirwaiz by stating that Hurriyat (M) exists only on the papers and it has no existence on the ground. "One day this organization (Hurriyat-M) decides to open up offices at district level while on the next day, its decision makers force workers to shut down those offices. These Hurriyat leaders are insensitive towards the problems of the people. Time and again, I requested the Chairman and Executive Body of the conglomerate to change the strategy, but no heed was paid towards my requests," Agha Syed Hassan had said. The Shia leader claimed that Hurriyat leaders have lost their credibility among people and amalgam has become redundant. Sources said the prominent Shia leader calling it quits is a big jolt for the Hurriyat led by Mirwaiz as it's already grappling with number of issues. Just a few months ago nearly ten constituents of Hurriyat (M) had joined the amalgam led by the Hurriyat hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani. "Pakistan has changed its strategy since the day Nawaz Sharif became the prime minister. The neighbouring country is trying to make Geelani stronger and most of the funds have been diverted towards Geelani's amalgam. The ten constituents who left the Hurriyat (M) were demanding hike in their monthly stipend and they were told by their bosses sitting across the LoC to join Geelani if they want a hike," said a source. "Pakistan wants separatists to somehow keep the pot boiling and believe that Geelani is the best bet." He said that Agha Syed Hassan who hails from Budgam area of central Kashmir has a vast following and one of the prominent mainstream parties is trying to strike a deal with him to break the monopoly of the National Conference in the area. "Agha sahib has himself acknowledged on many occasions that separatists are misleading people and they just exist on papers. We don't know what his future plans are but one thing is for sure separatist politics has disillusioned him," the source added. |
