Early Times Report

Kishtwar, June 13: A domestic helper drowned today after he tried to cross the rivulet at famous tourist resort at Mughal Maidan Kishtwar.
The helper with a local Congress Sarpanch identified by the police as 12-year-old Hashim Hussain, son of Ghulam Hussain, of Nisha, Chatroo was on way to the market and when he reached the tourist spot, he tried to cross the rivulet.
Hashim, however, lost the balance and slipped into the gushing water and drowned. The incident sparked chaos in whole Kishtwar town and its adjoining areas as many school children were on picnic in the area.
Eyewitness told Early Times that as soon as the incident took place, many people present at the tourist spot tried to rescue the boy but the strong water current swept his body deep into the rivulet, leading to his death.
The police later with the help of locals recovered Hashim's body from Khanpura area of Mughal Maidan and shifted it to Community Health Center, Chatroo for autopsy.
As per preliminary investigation, the boy after falling into the rivulet was hit in his head by boulders, resulting in his death.
Mughal Maidan is a renowned tourist destination in Kishtwar which is visited by hundreds of people including school children every day. But both district administration as well as Tourism department have failed to make any arrangements like quick action rescue team so that the incident like today's could be prevented.
While talking to Early Times, the local people said that today's incident is an eye opener for the government as well as local politicians who did not construct the wooden bridge which got damaged due to floods last year. In the absence of a bridge the local people are compelled to cross the rivulet, risking their lives.
"We have brought the matter into the notice of our MLA as well as to politicians associated with ruling party but nothing was done.
The wooden bridge would shorten the distance between the adjoining villages and tehsil headquarter by more than 5 km," said a group of angry people who assembled at the spot.
They said that people living in and around the area are forced to cross the rivulet either to get access to tehsil headquarter or main market or transportation to district headquarter.
Meanwhile, after completion of all legal formalities, police handed over the body of the boy to his family.
