| BJP led NDA Government's one year marred by controversies | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 13: Political analysts have been weighing one year of Modi led Government in terms of gains and losses. But if the BJP led NDA Government has made any significant contribution to the country's political fabric it is its art of triggering controversies, one after the other.
Controversies not only at the national level but at the state and the regional level.The latest being its full support to making June 21 as the International Day for Yoga.In act Prime Minister,Narendra Modi had been the author of the day fixed for celebrating June 21 as the international Yoga day.Nowhere in the world Yog Day did not evoke any controversy.If this resulted in some controversies it was the outcome of conflicting views dished out by those who have been supporting the programme.And one should not feel amazed over the rise of controversies over varied issues because India is practising liberal democratic practices.In addition to this India is home to multi-religious and multi-lingual communities.
June 21 was declared as the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 2014. Yoga, a 6,000+-year-old physical, mental and spiritual practice having its origin in India , aims to transform body and mind. The declaration came after the call for the adoption of 21 June as International Day of Yoga by the current Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi during his address to the UN General Assembly on September 27, 2014 wherein he stated:"Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us deal with climate change. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day.
A section of muslims in India felt enraged over fixing June 21 as the international Yoga day on the plea that a hindu linked tradition was being thrust on other communities.Several muslim leaders and scholars had no objection with Yoga if Surya Namaskar was not made a mandatory part of it.These scholars believed that in Islam people are supposed to bow their heads only before God and not before any object or planet.They were not ready to accept the argument that since the sun was the creation of God there was no harm in bowing one's head to the sun.
Well those who did not accept this argument said that since man was also the creation of God would one bow one's head to another man ?
Even as host of muslim organisations across India have objected to the Narendra Modi government's ambitious World Yoga Day plans , Darul Uloom Deoband - the largest Islamic seminary in Asia - has said it has no problem with yoga in public programmes, schools and colleges.
"We consider yoga as a form to physical exercise and accepted it. While offering namaz, we do several physical movements which also fall in the category of yoga. It has nothing to do with religion and so we don't object to it at any level," PRO of Darul Uloom Ashraf Usmani has said
Attacking the BJP MP from Gorakhpur, Yogi Adityanath, for alleging that the Muslim institutions were against yoga, Usmani said, "Some people have ulterior motive to spread misinformation to malign our image. They have been claiming that we have issued a fatwa against yoga, which is wrong. We never want to reject yoga as a form of exercise."
If the Congress is opposed to any and every plan of the BJP led NDA Government it is simply prt of the political game of the opposition party.If the Congress and its allies oppose anything that Modi plans it is part of their culture to display their secular credentials.But what is unfortunate is the way these so called secular organizations have been motivating non-Hindus,especially muslims,on opposing anything that Modi plans.
Christians have objected to to Modi's declaration on celebrating June 21 as the international day of Yoga becyse Sunday being the day of prayers in churches.Why did not the members of the UN General Assembly,majority being Christians,object to the fixing of June 21 as the day for Yoga.Possibly the UN General Assembly members had no calendar in front of them.Possibly they did not know that June 21 isSunday.
Well Modi's utterances,his plans and his ideas may not trigger criticism and opposition if he is able to tame and bridle those party leaders who trigger controversies or who have the art of kicking up controversies. Let him bridle those who have been supporting Ghar Vaapsi programme.Those who want the history of India to be rewritten.Those who try to give religious slant to various development projects and programmes.Thopse whose aim was to rebuild Ram Mandir which has the potential of triggering conflict. |
