Who takes the Abdullahs seriously in Valley! | To save his illegal building, Omar Abdullah slams demarcation drive as 'anti-Muslim' | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 13: Jammu and Kashmir's former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is desperately trying to save his own illegal building in Bhatindi, Jammu, in wake of the demarcation drive launched by the Forest department. If the drive had been "selective" and "anti-Muslim," as Omar has termed it, he would not have ignored a similar drive initiated by the Forest department in eight other areas of Jammu city, which are Hindu majority. "The fact is that the process of encroachment and illegal construction in Bhatindi was started by none other than Omar's father and former CM Farooq Abdullah. The encroachment that happened during the father-son duo's tenures as CM emboldened the land mafia," a senior official told Early Times. Sources said Farooq Abdullah raised a palatial building, which was later re-decorated by Omar. The building is allegedly built on the forestland. Sources said many more influential leaders cutting across the party lines, but mostly from the Abdullahs National Conference, made huge fortunes by the selling the forestland to people from the Kashmir valley and some parts of Jammu region who had migrated to Jammu city in early '90s. "Farooq was following the path shown by his late father Sheikh Abdullah who as CM had selectively settled a particular community in Doda by by-passing law. Omar later followed the footsteps of his father and grandfather," said a senior minister, wishing not to be named. Omar had in the past tried to evoke regional and religious sentiments in his bid to make himself politically relevant in the Valley where he is hated by a large section of the people. "He had tried to prove himself as the custodian of the rights of Muslims, despite the fact that he continued to enjoy perks when the Gujarat riots happened as he was a minister in the BJP-led NDA government in Centre. He didn't show any conviction to what he assumed to be adhering to ideologically then. Now he is deliberately tagging the anti-encroachment drive as anti-Muslim to save his property and his dwindling political career. But he is playing a dangerous game which could back-fire heavily on him," said the minister.
