Rs 300-cr Jammu and Kashmir sports plan stalled due to lack of interest: Report

New Delhi, June 13 : Despite the Narendra Modi government's desire to reach out to the youth of Jammu and Kashmir through sporting activities, the initiative to overhaul infrastructure in the troubled state is yet to find a breakthrough.
None of the Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) have shown an interest in submitting bids for projects, worth around Rs 300 crore, according to a report in the Hindustan Times. Monday was the last date for submitting and opening of the bids.
It was last year, when the Narendra Modi government had made announcements of major plans to cater to the people of the state.
The report further added that Ministry officials have no explanation for the indifference of the PSUs.
The plans outlaid in the project included reconstruction and upgradation of Srinagar's Bakshi Stadium along with the construction of an eight-lane synthetic athletic track.
The sports infrastructure development plan for Jammu and Kashmir comes under the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan (RGKA).
Tenders were invited from PSUs and state PSUs last month for laying a synthetic hockey turf, building a swimming pool and a multi-purpose indoor venue in Srinagar.
Several districts such as Anantnag, Handwara, Pulwama and Pattan will have modern, multi-purpose halls where local talent can train in table tennis, squash, badminton, weightlifting, basketball, volleyball and wrestling. But it awaits the interest of the PSU.
Last month, Jammu and Kashmir sports minister, Moulvi Imran Raza Ansari, had declared that revival of sports activities in the state was the government's top priority but somewhere the disinterest is harming the possibilities of seeing any development.
