BJP spreads wings in Kashmir, enrolls 3.5 lakh members | 50 lakh target set under ambitious Mahasampark prog | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 13: In its attempt to bloom lotus in Kashmir from where it had drawn a blank in the last Assembly polls, BJP has started spreading wings in the valley through its membership drive. It has so far enrolled 3.5 lakh members, 50,000 of them in the old Srinagar city, termed as the separatist stronghold and stone-pelting hub of Kashmir. The membership drive started on February 28 and ended on April 30. The registration forms of all the members are said to have been stored in the party office at Srinagar. The 3.5 lakh members are from every nook and corner of the Valley, according to party sources. The icing on the cake for the saffron brigade is the huge membership response in the old Srinagar city, the epicentre of stone-pelting. Sixty per cent of the members were said to be youth in the age group of 20-30 years. BJP's "hollow" slogans of providing employment to youth and ending regional discrimination were felt to working for it. The idea behind enrolling members is to create a pool of active workers to expand the party's base at the grassroot level to counter NC, PDP and Congress. For every 100 members, there is one active worker. So far the party has 3,500 active members. In the last assembly polls, the party had got only 48,000 votes from Kashmir. To make further inroads in Kashmir, the saffron brigade has started a "Mahasampark" programme and set a target to contact 50 lakh people. In the days to come, some central BJP leaders would also be visiting the valley to make the party programme a great success. The party is using these tactics to ensure that it wins on its own some seats in the valley in the next Lok Sabha and assembly polls. |
