Lack of infrastructure, staff mars education in Govt schools | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 13: The teacher ratio in Jammu Kashmir reflects the failure of the successive governments to bring the derailed system back on the track. Official documents reveal that 2000 schools are running in single classrooms and 1446 schools have single teacher. Reports said for political reasons, new schools have been opened and the existing institutions upgraded without providing the infrastructure and the staff to run them effectively. Documentary evidence proves that Srinagar is the only district in the state where all schools have more than one teacher. Baramulla is on top of the list to project a dismal picture of the state of education in government schools. Eighty-one schools in the district are manned by a single teacher. The number is 77 in Kupwara and 55 in Anantnag. In Bandipora five schools have a similar story to tell. Besides shortage of teachers thirty-nine schools in the state have no buildings, reports said and around 73% have no electricity. The sordid tale does not end here. There are 2356 schools, in the state that run in single rooms. Kashmir has 686 single-room schools. The schools have an enrolment of 13,429 students and 1370 teachers. Baramulla has 150 single room schools and Srinagar is has 97. Kupwara has 90 and Kulgam 36. Senior officials of the concerned department were not available for comment. |
