Amid squeezing political space in Kashmir, Mirwaiz eyes Jammu | Sheds 'crocodile tears' for Jammu Muslims | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 14: Finding his political space squeezing in Kashmir, Hurriyat Conference-M Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq now eyes Jammu to be in spotlight. After threatening to launch a full-fledged agitation in support of forestland grab in Jammu, Mirwaiz is all set to visit the winter capital to mobilize his resources. On June 14, while addressing the Friday gathering at Jamia Masjid gathering, Mirwaiz not only dedicated his entire speech for Muslims living in Jammu region, but also threatened to launch a full-fledged agitation to "fight for their rights". The development has come at a time when Mirwaiz, the moderate face of Hurriyat is losing members and getting weaker in Kashmir while his arch rival, hardliner Syed Ali Geelani is getting stronger. Playing his communal card, Mirwaiz said from transfers to evictions, "Jammu Muslims were being subjected to never before atrocities" and that he would fight for their cause. Terming the government decision to evict land grabbers from forestland as "persecution of Jammu Muslims", Mirwaiz said it was a "well-planned strategy of the BJP-RSS combine that brings to mind the painful memories of massacre of Muslims in 1947." "If the forcible eviction of Muslims from Jammu areas doesn't stop now, the Muslims of Jammu and Kashmir won't sit as mute spectators and will be forced to start an agitation against these malicious designs," Mirwaiz announced from the Jamia Masjid pulpit. He said the sacrifices of Jammu Muslims can't be forgotten ever. "Kashmiris have political, social and religious affinity with Jammu Muslims. Being inalienable part of the fabric of Jammu and Kashmir, Kashmiri Muslims will never leave their Jammu brethren alone and would firmly stand with them in these difficult times," he said. Claiming that he was well-connected to Jammu, Mirwaiz said a delegation of Jammu Muslims met him and apprised him about these details. In his speech the Mirwaiz also took dig at transfer policy adopted by the government in Jammu province. He alleged that government was transferring many Muslim officers from Jammu, Kishtwar, Rajouri, Poonch, Doda and Bhaderwah and "replacing them with communally-inclined officers who were threatening Muslim residents to leave their houses and lands." Over the past few months, having intensified its verbal campaign on Kashmir, Pakistan has started pampering hardliner Syed Ali Geelani at the cost of Mirwaiz. Islamabad is making Geelani stronger and his rival from the moderate Hurriyat faction weaker. In past few weeks, a number of separatists have left the Mirwaiz-led Hurriyat and joined Geelani's Hurriyat. Observers opine that finding his space squeezing, Mirwaiz wants to grab attention of the Muslims living in other regions of the state. "Mirwaiz is not only a political leader but also religious leader. Finding his political space squeezing, he is now concentrating more on his image as a religious leader in other regions," said a Hurriyat M leader. He said in bid to avoid embarrassment Mirwaiz wants to show the world community that he represents people from all regions of the state and not Kashmir alone. "Expressing voice over Jammu is nothing but a political stunt to gain sympathy of those whose interests are at stake in the forestland in Jammu," he added. |
